From Overwhelmed to Empowered: Marie’s Inspiring Slimming World Journey


Marie Brown joined Slimming World in January 2014, feeling overweight and fed up after struggling with her weight for years. Having tried Weight Watchers for a couple of years with little progress, she saw a promotion for Slimming World in her husband’s newspaper and decided to give it a try.


“It took a few weeks to really understand the plan,” Marie admits, “but once it clicked, everything changed.”


As a ward sister at the Royal Victoria Hospital, Marie’s job was stressful, and she often missed meals during long shifts, relying on crisps, chips, and chocolate bars to get through the day. Alongside her weight struggles, Marie also faced high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and osteoporosis, which added to her concerns.


But Marie’s perseverance paid off. By October 15, 2014, she reached her target weight, losing an incredible 2 stone. Not only did she shed the pounds, but she also saw remarkable health improvements—her medication for hypertension was reduced, and she gained relief from osteoporosis treatments, with regular reviews every two years.


“Slimming World has changed my life,” Marie shares. “I go to group every week to keep my weight and health in check. I love picking up tips, new ideas, and recipes from like-minded people. Plus, having a dedicated and enthusiastic consultant is a real bonus!”


Marie enjoys making family meals and is grateful that Slimming World doesn’t feel like a diet. “I’m allergic to shellfish and don’t eat fish, but the variety of meals, plans, and recipes gives me plenty of choice,” she explains. Some of her favorite dishes include spaghetti bolognese, cottage pie, roast dinners, stir-frys, turkey burgers, soups, and salads.


Exercise has also become a big part of Marie’s routine. “I work out three days a week at the leisure centre, which is something I wouldn’t have had the confidence to do before losing weight,” she says.


What Marie loves most about Slimming World is the freedom it offers. “The plan works for me because nothing is off limits,” she explains. “I know some things are free, others need to be measured, and I keep my high-syn treats in check every day. I never go hungry or feel like I’m missing out.”


Even on holidays, Marie enjoys herself without feeling restricted. “I love my holidays, and I can fully enjoy them, knowing that when I return to group, I’ve stayed in control. It makes me feel so proud when I step on the scales.”


Marie is also passionate about giving back to her group. “I love sharing my recipes and meal ideas on our private Facebook page. It makes me happy to think my pictures might inspire others.”


Her top tips? “Always cook a few extra potatoes and veg to make patties, keep chicken drumsticks, boiled eggs, and plenty of fruit and 0% fat yogurt for snacks,” she advises.


After many years at target, Marie reflects, “I love my life, I love my health, and I love Slimming World.”
